That Cowboy Hat
Enos and Adell had moved to a good size house on 33rd Street in Galveston in nineteen sixty five. Twilla and Valerie, Garry, Darrel, and Claude, along with Mother, Martin and Norman; had just arrived home from Church. Enos didn't go to Church much in those days, so he stayed home and enjoyed the peace and quiet. As we came in the front door, passing the only Television we had, it was very obvious that there was a nice hole in the upper center of the picture tube. Daddy explained how he had slipped on the throw rug and stabbed a hole in the tube with the screwdriver in his hand as he struggled to keep his balance. Darrel, Garry, and I went off to North Carolina in 1966 to work for ten months. Yes we ran up Mother's phone bill calling collect. Mother and Daddy moved to a trailer house where Darrel's house is now, and we all came to visit and eat, when we returned to Texas. Enos had a nice Barber shop in the Sante Fe shopping center, and on Sunday afternoon he would take us to the shop for a haircut. He was working on one of the other's hair, when he explained what happened years before. Enos said "I was just sitting there watching those Cowboys riding back and forth on horseback , on that Television; aiming my little .25 automatic pistol at one of thier hats, and that durned thing went off". We never had doubted his word, for soon after I think he had started to attend "Church".
